Bank of Baroda has viewed the Indian Diaspora as an important business segment hand has been consistently exploring opportunity to engage with them meaningfully. To build bridges for Indian Diaspora, Bank of Baroda, opened the first branch at Makadara Road, Mombasa in Kenya and another at Kampala in Uganda.

It is clear that the practical business considerations of Bank of Baroda justified the choice of the area for the first phase of international operation. The operations in Africa were important to reinforce the traditional business ties that enterprising Gujaratis had forged in east coast colonies of British. This has remained the guiding principle of the Bank in conducting its foreign business, particularly in the less developed nations in Africa. Majority of them were teachers, clerks and junior ranked officers who had modest but steady incomes. It was indeed an attractive facility that is popular even today in its branches in Africa.

It was just the beginning. But very soon, it was recognised and accepted amongst the Indian and global banking and financial institution as the "India's International Bank". The bank continues to play the challenging role and it has demonstrated brilliant performance in African countries enjoying the benefit of the first mover.

By that time world started to fast rediscover the unharnessed potential of Africa and had begun to commit financial resources towards the socio-economic development of the continent. The Bank was strongly present in different parts of Africa supporting the economic development of the different countries.Bank of Baroda's banking journey in Africa has been one of vision, enterprise, financial prudence and corporate governance. It is also a story of this bank's consolidation and rationalisation process, to further strengthen its overseas operations, as per the strategic need, but keeping the customer interest paramount. Since most of its overseas branches are strategically situated at places where sizeable Non-resident Indians are residing, the Bank is in a position to deliver its products promptly and efficiently to its NRI customers. The range of products include remittance facilities and acceptance of deposits in Indian Rupees (NRE/NRO) as well as in designated foreign currencies  (FCNR).
